About the Department/College
The Kitt School of Music at Northern Arizona University continues a proud tradition of training the next generation of music teachers, performers, and scholars for the State of Arizona and the Southwest. Kitt School of Music is a vibrant community within Northern Arizona University serving approximately 250 music majors and hundreds of music minors and non-music majors. The School offers three undergraduate degrees in music (Bachelor of Music in Performance, Bachelor of Music Education, Bachelor of Arts) and the Master of Music (seven concentrations including Vocal Performance). Studio faculty frequently model artistic excellence through performances in solo, chamber, and ensemble settings. Committed to a diverse and civil working and learning environment, NAU has earned a reputation as a university with all the features of a large institution but with a personal touch, with a faculty and staff dedicated to each student's success. All faculty members are expected to promote student learning and help students achieve academic outcomes.
About the Position
The NAU Kitt School of Music seeks a dynamic, creative, collaborative, and dedicated teacher of voice. Teaching in a secondary area may be assigned, commensurate with departmental needs and candidate qualifications.
Responsibilities Include
- Teach private voice lessons.
- Teach weekly studio class.
- Teach courses in voice related areas (literature, pedagogy, diction for singers).
- Maintain a performing and/or research agenda at the national level.
- Service assignments will include committee work consistent with all faculty appointments, student recruitment, and the coordination of programming that enriches the Kitt School of Music, such as guest artist engagements.
Minimum Qualifications
- Doctorate in performance or the clear equivalent in the form of outstanding achievement in the area of specialization.
*A combination of related education, experience, and training may be used as an equivalent to the above Minimum Qualifications.
Preferred Qualifications
- Mezzo-soprano or soprano.
- Demonstrated success in teaching performers and future educators at the university/collegiate level.
- Extensive and varied experience as performer and/or recording artist in genres such as opera, oratorio, art song, and musical theater.
- Evidence of potential for ongoing excellence in scholarly/creative contributions to the profession.
- Evidence of success in, or potential for, student recruitment.
- Experience teaching in a secondary area at the collegiate/university level.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
- Knowledge of current trends in voice pedagogy.
- Knowledge of trends in vocal repertoire and literature.
- Ability to demonstrate appropriate vocal technique in instructional settings.
- Ability to work collaboratively with faculty in applied, ensemble, and academic areas in music.
- Ability to mentor and advise students from a variety of backgrounds and ability levels.
Compensation
Budgeted salary is $70,000. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.
Pre-Employment Check
Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, an employment history verification and a degree verification (in some cases) prior to employment. You may also be required to complete a fingerprint background check. This position has been identified as a safety/security sensitive position. Therefore, per AZ Revised Statute, Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, employment history investigation, degree verification (in some cases) and fingerprinting. Notice of Availability of the Annual Fire and Security Report
Each year Northern Arizona University releases an Annual Security Report. The report is a result of a federal law known as the Clery Act. The report includes Clery reportable crime statistics for the three most recent completed calendar years and discloses procedures, practices and programs NAU uses to keep students and employees safe including how to report crimes or other emergencies occurring on campus. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as this campus has on-campus student housing. This report discloses fire safety policies and procedures related to on-campus student housing and statistics for fires that occurred in those facilities.
