- This position is an on-site position which requires the incumbent to complete their work primarily at an NAU site, campus, or facility with or without accommodation. Opportunities for remote work are rare.
- This position is posted as Commercial Kitchen Maintenance Technician, Painter and Surface Specialist , which is a working title. The NAU system title for this position is Commercial Kitchen Service Technician, Intermediate.
- Driving a vehicle on behalf of the university is anticipated to be a regular part of this position. Arizona Administrative Code Fleet Safety Policy requires all employees who drive on university business become authorized by submitting Driver's license information for driving record monitoring, and completion of training appropriate to the level of driving performed. The law applies to all faculty, staff, and students who drive personal or university-owned motorized vehicles for any business purpose. About the Department/College
The NAU Dining Maintenance team is a part of the Campus Services and Activities department and supports over 30 dining locations on the NAU campus as well as the High-Country Conference Center. This position reports to the Commercial Kitchen Maintenance Supervisor and will perform work primarily in areas used by the NAU Campus Dining program, the High Country Conference Center, and other areas of campus for special events as needed.
About the Position
Provides routine repair and maintenance of commercial kitchen equipment to ensure safe and orderly operation with
minimal disruption to university functions. Maintenance personnel participate in a mandatory weekly on-call rotation to minimize downtime for campus dining facilities and requires the ability to work some evenings and weekends. This position will require some work to be performed in hot and cold environments, such as replacing a belt on the roof or replacing a fan in a walk-in freezer. This position primarily works in commercial kitchen environments and related food service areas. This position assists with snow removal as required for Campus Dining loading docks and other Campus Services areas of responsibility
Responsibilities Include
40% - Repair, Replace, & Install Equipment
- Performs effective, routine, service solutions for commercial kitchen equipment that may connect to multiple utility types, including gas, electric, domestic water and waste, and steam systems
- Performs basic installation of commercial food service equipment and assists with more advanced installations as needed.
- Performs basic refrigeration and plumbing repairs and assists with more advanced repair as needed.
- Tests equipment to ensure proper performance and functioning.
- Maintains the dining facilities with special consideration for the overall appearance of public dining spaces including furniture and fixtures.
- Field, prioritize, and perform service support requests from an on-line work order system and in-person inspections.
- Maintains accurate records of work performed, parts used, and time spent on each job.
45% - Install, Repair, and Maintain Food Service Surfaces
- Perform surface repair and finish touch-up of walls, ceilings, flooring, furniture, millwork, in kitchens and public dining areas.
- Repair and replace specialized surfaces used in food service preparation and serving areas including food-grade anti-microbial materials, small areas of engineered solid surfaces, tile walls and floors, basic and specialized tile/grout, and cove base.
- Match, custom mix, and apply paints and other finishes to various surfaces including surface and grout sealants as appropriate.
10% - Special Event Support
- Provides food service equipment set-up including but not limited to temporary electricity, water, cooking gas, lighting, refrigeration, mobile food service units, and sanitation stations as requested by Campus Services operations staff at various indoor and outdoor locations across campus.
5% - Shop Safety
- Maintain manufacturer repair certifications, county health code awareness, and certification in appropriate OSHA standards.
- Maintain inventory and proper maintenance of tools and instrumentation including proper disposal of unusable paints, sealants, or caulking.
- Immediately correct unsafe conditions in work area and report any non-correctable conditions to supervisor immediately.
5% - Other
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma.
- Completion of a refrigeration technician program or vocational training.
- 2 years relevant experience.
*A combination of related education, experience, and training may be used as an equivalent to the above Minimum Qualifications.
Preferred Qualifications
- Certification as a refrigeration technician or HVAC technician.

- Knowledge of safety regulations and guidelines when working with refrigerants and electrical systems.

Compensation
- Budgeted salary is $51,085.00. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.
Pre-Employment Check
Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, an employment history verification and a degree verification (in some cases) prior to employment. You may also be required to complete a fingerprint background check. Also, as an employer in the state of Arizona, NAU is required to participate in the federal E-Verify program that assists employers with verifying new employees' right to work in the United States.
This position has been identified as a safety/security sensitive position. Therefore, per AZ Revised Statute, Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, employment history investigation, degree verification (in some cases) and fingerprinting. Notice of Availability of the Annual Fire and Security Report
Each year Northern Arizona University releases an Annual Security Report. The report is a result of a federal law known as the Clery Act. The report includes Clery reportable crime statistics for the three most recent completed calendar years and discloses procedures, practices and programs NAU uses to keep students and employees safe including how to report crimes or other emergencies occurring on campus. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as this campus has on-campus student housing. This report discloses fire safety policies and procedures related to on-campus student housing and statistics for fires that occurred in those facilities.
