Northern Arizona University's Human Resources Benefits department plays a vital role in supporting faculty and staff by administering a comprehensive range of employee benefits. The team ensures smooth delivery and compliance across programs such as health, dental, vision, life and disability insurance, retirement plans, paid time off, tuition reduction, and wellness resources. Through responsive service and clear guidance, the Benefits department helps employees make informed decisions to support their well-being and long-term success at NAU.
About the Position
Under the direction of the Benefits Manager, the Human Resources Analyst, Intermediate performs professional-level HR administration in support of employee benefits and the smooth operation of related programs and processes. This position plays a key role on the Benefits team by supporting a wide range of employee benefit programs, including health, dental, life, disability, retirement, time-off, tuition reduction, and workers' compensation. The analyst educates employees on available plans and options, helping them understand their benefits and ensuring seamless implementation. Additionally, the role manages and updates employee data within the human resources information system, ensuring accurate enrollment and coverage for all eligible employees.
Responsibilities Include
Customer Service - 25%
- Provide customer service, general benefits education, and problem resolution for a broad range of benefits issues.
- Provide general counsel to employees on benefits programs.
- Conduct data analysis and research in the customer service function and in resolution of problems.
- Provide formal and informal presentations including orientation about benefit programs as needed/requested by supervisor.
- Assist with special events such as open enrollments and benefit fairs.
- Coordinate with other university departments on benefits-related issues and events.
- Provides exceptional customer service to inquirers orally and/or in writing; resolves questions and inquiries to promote employee understanding of HR programs.
Vendor Liaison - 20%
- Liaison with vendors and state entities, providing appropriate employee data, working to resolve employee/vendor/state problems, and maintaining cooperative NAU/vendor/state relationships.
- Transfers data files to vendors.
- Resolves eligibility file errors.
Data Input & Software Support - 20%
- Perform data input into a computerized human resources information system (PeopleSoft) to establish and update employee records and benefits information.
- Process daily event maintenance in Benefits Administration function of PeopleSoft; evaluate and correct errors.
- Manage and process new hire enrollments and qualified life event changes.
- Process various payroll reports to ensure payroll is closed in a timely manner with accurate data.
- Resolve enrollment issues in PeopleSoft.
- Update benefit set up tables in PeopleSoft.
Special Projects- 15%
- Random special projects may include, data cleanup, records retention or process improvement.
- Ensure compliance with laws and regulations, policy changes, and committee assignments.
- Oversee the administration of COBRA enrollment and related correspondence.
- Oversee the administration of Retiree Life Insurance Invoicing and Payments.
- Prepare reports to management on benefits-related topics.
- Manage the online Employee Tuition Reduction Program requests process.
General HR Support - 15%
- Provides general administrative and project support within HR for a variety of projects, initiatives, and general department needs.
- Performs routine tasks required to administer and execute human resource programs in HR functional areas.
- Maintains knowledge of trends, best practices, regulatory changes, and new technologies in human resources areas.
- Handles sensitive employee information in accordance with established procedures, policies, and applicable laws.
Other - 5%
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in relevant field.
- 3 years of relevant human resources experience.
*A combination of related education, experience, and training may be used as an equivalent to the above Minimum Qualifications.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience in benefits.
- Previous human resources experience in a higher education environment.

Knowledge
- Intermediate knowledge of Human Resources tools, procedures, processes, policies, and concepts.
- Intermediate knowledge of Human Resources-related laws and regulations applicable to assigned area.
- Intermediate knowledge of Human Resources information systems.
- Knowledge of industry trends related to assigned area of Human Resources.

- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

Compensation
Salary range begins at $53,000. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.
Pre-Employment Check
Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, an employment history verification and a degree verification (in some cases) prior to employment. You may also be required to complete a fingerprint background check. Also, as an employer in the state of Arizona, NAU is required to participate in the federal E-Verify program that assists employers with verifying new employees' right to work in the United States.
This position has been identified as a safety/security sensitive position. Therefore, per AZ Revised Statute, Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, employment history investigation, degree verification (in some cases) and fingerprinting. Notice of Availability of the Annual Fire and Security Report
Each year Northern Arizona University releases an Annual Security Report. The report is a result of a federal law known as the Clery Act. The report includes Clery reportable crime statistics for the three most recent completed calendar years and discloses procedures, practices and programs NAU uses to keep students and employees safe including how to report crimes or other emergencies occurring on campus. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as this campus has on-campus student housing. This report discloses fire safety policies and procedures related to on-campus student housing and statistics for fires that occurred in those facilities.
