About the Department/College
The Pathogen and Microbiome Institute (PMI) at Northern Arizona University (NAU) is recruiting for a highly skilled, dynamic individual to join their team as a Research Technician in the Settles research group. PMI is a security sensitive environment and as such a cleared background check and fingerprinting is required.
About the Position
The purpose of this position is to support Dr. Erik Settles' funded research projects at the Pathogen and Microbiome Institute of Northern Arizona University. The successful candidate will conduct high-quality data analysis for laboratory projects focused on vaccine development, vaccine correlates, therapies, and diagnostics. Achieving these research objectives requires exceptional experience with protein expression and purification, TCR amplicon sequencing, single cell sequencing library preparation, qPCR skills, and database management and laboratory maintenance, including specialized Applied Biosystems qPCR instruments, FPLC, and the ability to safely work in a biosafety level 2 (BSL-2) work environment. An outstanding employee will have excellent organizational skills, will lead and train student employees, contribute to lab management, and show a high level of communication with their research team.
Responsibilities Include
85% - Molecular and Cellular Biology Laboratory Research
- Perform protein expression and purification using E. coli expressing systems and FPLC purification of both soluble and insoluble proteins.
- Sequence RNA using immune cell receptor amplicon sequencing and single cell sequencing methods.
- Design and test new primers for receptor amplicon sequencing, and qPCR analysis.
- Perform lab QC (SDS paige followed by Western, sypro Ruby stain, and coomasie stain) and enter data accurately into research databases.
- Work safely with potentially hazardous materials such as pathogens and laboratory chemicals.
- Attend required safety trainings for BSL-2 techniques and chemical safety; understand standardized operating procedures (SOPs) required to safely generate data in lab and field settings.
10% - Laboratory Operations
- Place orders for lab supplies.
- Organize labeled sample containers, reagents, and media for lab projects.
- General laboratory management, cleaning, instrument maintenance, and upkeep of shared reagent stocks.
5% - Other
- Assist with the management of undergraduate students.
- Organize and mentor undergraduate students in a team-based environment.
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in relevant discipline.
*A combination of related education, experience, and training may be used as an equivalent to the above Minimum Qualifications.

- Fundamental knowledge of research methods, protocols, data collection, and analysis.

Compensation
Salary range is $38,628 to $51,250. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.
Pre-Employment Check
Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, an employment history verification and a degree verification (in some cases) prior to employment. You may also be required to complete a fingerprint background check. Notice of Availability of the Annual Fire and Security Report
Each year Northern Arizona University releases an Annual Security Report. The report is a result of a federal law known as the Clery Act. The report includes Clery reportable crime statistics for the three most recent completed calendar years and discloses procedures, practices and programs NAU uses to keep students and employees safe including how to report crimes or other emergencies occurring on campus. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as this campus has on-campus student housing. This report discloses fire safety policies and procedures related to on-campus student housing and statistics for fires that occurred in those facilities.
